Color Correction Hair Color Aftercare: First 48 Hours and Week-by-Week Care

By The Luxe Studio | October 5, 2026

If you just left my chair loving your highlights, keep the first 48 hours simple: don’t wash, don’t soak, and don’t sweat hard. Color correction hair color takes time and precision, and those first two days are where your tone either settles beautifully or starts slipping. Here in Glendale, the sun and heat can speed up fading, so this plan is how I help you keep that fresh, clean finish you came in for.

Quick context: Color Correction is a corrective service to fix uneven or unwanted hair color. The timing varies based on complexity, so I always recommend a consultation so I can assess what your hair needs and map out the safest path to your goal.

The first 24 to 48 hours: the rules that protect your tone

Right after colour correction on hair, your cuticle is still settling. That’s why I generally recommend a strict 48-hour window where you treat your hair like it’s wearing a fresh fabric dye. Give it time to set.

Do this

  • Keep hair dry. If you shower, clip it up and avoid hot steam directly on your scalp and hairline.
  • Use a leave-in bond-repair or conditioning spray if your ends feel thirsty after a big correction day.
  • If you have to heat style, keep it low and use a thermal protectant first.

Avoid this

  • Washing, even “just a rinse.” Water alone can pull fresh toner.
  • Heavy sweating. If you’re a gym regular, keep workouts light for two days, or do a gentle walk instead.
  • Swimming or soaking. Chlorine and salt water are rough on corrected color.

If your correction included delicate face-framing work, be extra careful around your hairline. I hear it all the time that we “get the edges around my face better than anybody else, ” and I want that detail to stay crisp, not fade out early.

Week 1 in Glendale: sun, sweat, and heat are the real “color correction red” triggers

The first week is where warmth can creep in, especially if you were correcting brassiness or color correction red tones. Glendale’s warm sunny weather and those dry Santa Ana winds can pull moisture fast. Dry hair reflects light differently, so the color can look dull or warmer than it really is.

Your wash timing and water temperature

I usually like the first wash at 48 to 72 hours. Use lukewarm water, keep your shampoo focused on the scalp, and let the suds run through the ends instead of scrubbing them. Hot water opens the cuticle and can fade toner quicker.

What to avoid all week

  • High heat styling every day. If you can, alternate with air-dry days or a low-heat blowout.
  • Strong sun on your part line. A hat helps. UV-protecting hair products help too.
  • Clarifying shampoos, dandruff shampoos, and anything marketed as “deep clean.” These can strip corrected color.

A quick real-life note: People come to me because they want that “love my highlights” brightness without the harsh, dry feeling. The first week is where gentle care makes the difference between shiny and stressed.

Products that keep color correction colors looking clean (not muddy)

You don’t need a shelf of products, but you do need the right types. If you’re trying to keep color correction colors looking even, think gentle cleansing plus steady moisture.

  • Sulfate-free, color-safe shampoo: helps prevent fast fading and keeps toner stable.
  • Hydrating conditioner: focus mid-lengths to ends. Dry ends make corrected color look rough.
  • Bond-repair treatment (salon-recommended): weekly for 4 to 6 weeks is a solid rhythm after a big corrective day.
  • Purple or toning shampoo if needed: only if I told you it fits your tone goal. Overdoing it can turn hair flat or smoky.

If you’re busy or commuting between Glendale, Pasadena, Burbank, or North Hollywood, keep your routine simple: protect from heat, wash gently, and do one weekly mask. That’s it.

Two weeks to a month: swim rules, tone checks, and follow-ups near Brand Blvd

Pools and ocean water can undo hard work fast. I recommend skipping chlorine and salt water for two full weeks after a color correction. If you absolutely can’t avoid it, let me know before you go. I’d rather help you protect your tone than fix an avoidable fade.

My simple maintenance schedule

  • Wash gently starting 48 to 72 hours after your service.
  • Do a hydrating mask or bond treatment once a week for 4 to 6 weeks.
  • Plan a 2 to 4 week tone check or gloss refresh if I recommended it.

A lot of my downtown Glendale clients pair a follow-up with errands at The Americana at Brand. If you want an evening or weekend tone check and you’re coming in from La Cañada Flintridge or Eagle Rock, I’ll do my best to find a spot that doesn’t disrupt your week.

If you want more background on the color work itself, I’ve also written about hair coloring in Central Glendale and how I think about tone, placement, and long-term upkeep.

When to reach out: brassiness, fading, or irritation (and what not to DIY)

I keep my space calm and I take my time, and that doesn’t stop when you leave. If something feels off, reach out. I’d much rather talk it through than have you panic-fix it at home.

“The atmosphere is calm and never chaotic, which makes it the perfect spot for self-care.”

Reach out if: your hair suddenly turns overly warm or brassy, your tone fades in patches, or your scalp feels irritated beyond normal mild sensitivity.

Please skip: box dye, random toner from a beauty supply aisle, or heavy clarifying washes trying to “reset” the color. Those fixes tend to make the next correction harder, not easier.

If you’re pricing out a colour correction salon, my Color Correction starts at $220. The best next step is a consultation so I can assess your current color and decide the cleanest, safest approach. You can also browse all services or check out recent work in the studio gallery.
